A larp by Nina Runa Essendrop

Music Creatures is a larp that focuses on experiencing the world through music and sound. You will play the Music Creatures. They look like normal human beings, but they move, breathe and talk through sound. For many generations they have secretly blended into human societies, but this night they have chosen to open up one of their meeting places to a few invited human guests. Some Music Creatures might be excited to show the humans how they experience the world while others might be skeptical or scared. Revealing yourself to your surroundings is always a big deal. Music Creatures is an immersive, non-verbal, physical larp. An interacting audience will be invited to play the roles of human guests.

Instruction for audience
You have been invited to the secret meeting place of the music creatures. The music creatures experience the world through music and sound. They have been living secretly and silently in human societies for a very long time, but now they are opening up for the first time. You will get to interact with the music creatures on their own term and possibly get the chance to experience the world as they do.

About Blackbox Cph – a festival for experimental role play

Welcome to Blackbox Cph VIII, the annual festival for blackbox larps in Copenhagen. The festival runs for three days in HusetKBH with three stages and a lounge as the frame for a fantastic weekend full of play, partying and amazing experiences.

What can I play at Blackbox Cph?
This year we have 11 premiere larps, two reruns and an installation. All the larps are 3-4 hours long including a small workshop, where you will get all the preparation you need. The larps are all quite different but this year we have a lot of mourning, death and horror on the menu.

How do I sign up?
Sign up for Blackbox Cph will open the 21st of November at 20.00 on our website. You have to buy a ticket for each larp separately and most of them cost 75 dkk for players or 40 dkk for audience.

What is blackbox larp?
Larp is originally an acronym for Live Action Role Playing. It refers to a type of interactive storytelling in which the players act as characters within the set fiction. Larp can generally be described as theater without an audience or script. Blackbox larps are more heavily inspired by theatre. Either because they use technical equipment as a part of the design, have a simplistic aesthetic as seen on stage, draw on the non-verbal language of dance or tries to incorporate an audience. All in all blackbox is a quite experimental genre of larp.

Who can participate?
Our participants are a beautiful mix of curious newcomers, seasoned Danish players and an international crowd with a lot of artists. All of you are welcome. The main language of the festival is English but a few of the larps are only played in Nordic.

Will there be an audience?
Normally larps don’t have audience. All the participants are equal part main characters, support and spectators at the same time. But for blackbox larps there have been experiments with having an audience, and this year we have invited our designers to try to rethink how an audience can be a different kind of participants, instead of just passive spectators. If you want to experience larp as an audience, you can read more about the individual experiences on our website.

Is there something I should do before the larp?
You should always arrive for you larp at least fifteen minutes before, so we can find a stand in if you don’t show up. As a player, bring a pair of black socks, black pants, and a black t-shirt to blend in to the blackbox unless the larp description says otherwise.

Can I hang out?
During the whole festival you can visit our lounge at Musikcaféen. You can hang out and chat in the cozy atmosphere, and drinks can be bought in the bar. Saturday evening we’ll host a party there, which will be open to everyone interested in the festival.

Can I buy food?
Previously at Blackbox Cph we have served food for players. This will not happen this time. Blackbox larps are growing shorter and our experience has been that a lot of food went to waste. Therefore, remember to eat from home, buy food at HusetKBH or find something in the vicinity of our venue and eat it in the lounge. But make sure you are well fed when you come to play.

Blackbox Cph is organized by Gnist in cooperation with HusetKBH and TeaterHuset.
